Victorian Visionary Behind Lincolnshire’s Rail Expansion Honoured

A blue plaque has been revealed at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre to commemorate Sir Edward Watkin. Sir Edward was a crucial part of Victorian railway expansion and contributed greatly to the transformation of Grimsby into a significant fishing port. His key initiatives included the expansion of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, contributing significantly to the region’s economic growth. Sir Edward’s vision paved the way for the establishment of the Royal Dock, followed by the Union and Alexandra Docks, aiding Grimsby’s rise in the fishing industry. David Ornsby, the operations manager at the heritage centre, expressed admiration for Sir Edward’s groundbreaking work in the industry and hoped that his story would motivate visitors in future years.
