Scunthorpe Landlords Face Challenges with New Licensing Scheme

Landlords in Scunthorpe’s Crosby, Park and Town wards are voicing apprehension about a recent Selective Licensing scheme rolled out by North Lincolnshire Council. Slated to take effect from 6 October, the scheme necessitates landlords of approximately 1,230 private homes to secure a licence, this will have a base cost of £955. The project seeks to address problems such as antisocial behaviour and indiscriminate dumping, with the backing of measures like Public Space Protection Orders and teamwork with Humberside Police. Nonetheless, the scheme is facing backlash, particularly from the Scunthorpe Landlords Association, where its chairman, Gurch Singh, contends that the scheme unjustly targets landlords and falls short of addressing the fundamental issues tied to poverty. While the scheme is backed by some local residents and councillors with the hope that it will uplift housing standards and community conditions, others fear it may result in a spike in rental prices and deter property investment. The council’s verdict comes after an unsuccessful legal opposition from the SLA and underlines a wider attempt to enhance living conditions in the area.
