Dan Dobbs, a Lincoln native and previous sufferer of alcoholism, has shared his path to recovery, advocating for local employers to display understanding for individuals working to overcome addiction. Mr Dobbs started drinking at the age of 18 during his employment tenure in Lincoln’s hospitality industry. Now, aged 38, he engages with the Lincolnshire Recovery Partnership, a service he credits with helping him towards sobriety, after understanding these struggles first-hand. He insists, “I’ve come across some incredibly talented people in recovery. It’s vital that we don’t abandon them, but instead offer chances for development.”
In 2018, Mr Dobbs underwent one of his most challenging years battling alcoholism, a fight that commenced in his early 20s and had significant impacts on his life and personal relationships. Seeking assistance from the Lincolnshire Recovery Partnership in 2020 was a pivotal moment in his journey. He commented on how the service’s non-prejudiced and compassionate demeanour made a significant difference.
Presently, Mr Dobbs is a member of the service as a recovery connector, and is being trained to become a recovery coach, with the aim of assisting others on their paths to recovery. He emphasised the significance of comprehension and support, noting, “Recovery is attainable for anyone, much like it was for myself.”
The Lincolnshire Recovery Partnership will host a conference on 15th August, designed to educate local employers on ways to support individuals during their recovery. The event will host guest speaker Paul Merson, ex-Arsenal footballer, who will offer his viewpoints on overcoming addiction.
