Power Cut During Heart Surgery at Scunthorpe General Leads to Tragic Death

An unfortunate event at Scunthorpe General Hospital resulted in the demise of 77-year-old Jean Dye due to a power cut during her heart surgery. The operation, which was intended to treat her cardiac disease, was abruptly interrupted due to a sudden power failure lasting 10 minutes on 7 September. An inquiry into Ms Dye’s death indicated that the absence of power interruption might have potentially allowed her survival. Paul Smith, the Senior Coroner of Greater Lincolnshire, has put forward a Prevention of Future Deaths report to NHS England. It emphasises the crucial requirement for a reconsideration of existing procedures and possible training in relation to Emergency Power Off circuit controls. The prolongation in restoring power was identified by the coroner as a pivotal aspect leading to Ms Dye’s death. NHS England has been urged, through the report, to react to these issues with expectations for a reply by 28 August. The Lincoln Post adapted this story from original reporting provided by www.bbc.com.
