Lincolnshire Couple Stranded as Heat Forces Closure of Keadby Bridge

A Lincolnshire couple found themselves stranded on their narrowboat at Keadby Lock after a heatwave-induced closure of a significant bridge. Michael Smith, 64, and Linda Leetham, 61, were traversing the Stainforth and Keadby Canal, when they were confronted with the closure of the Vazon Sliding Railway Bridge near Scunthorpe. Network Rail has expressed regret over the inconvenience, attributing ‘temperature restrictions following recent equipment issues’ as the cause for the bridge’s closure. Upon a drop in temperatures to 16C, the bridge will be reopened.

While en route to their moorings in Thorne from Chesterfield Canal, Mr Smith and Ms Leetham’s journey was interrupted. Despite the delay, Mr Smith has relayed that they are coping adequately with provisions, thanks to local stores in Keadby.

The Vazon Sliding Railway Bridge, being unique in the UK, has a legacy of difficulties. Despite structural enhancements carried out last year, mechanical and temperature sensitivities continue to be problematic. Network Rail is making efforts to resolve these enduring issues.

Mr Smith usually evades this problematic bridge; however, he was left with no alternatives due to low water levels leading to widespread closures of most Pennine canals. Reflecting on the wider implications of the closures, Mr Smith pointed out, ‘Canal users are suffering more than anybody else.’ The Canals and Rivers Trust has recognised these closures, emphasising the reliance on consistent rainfall to restore the waterways.
