A regular afternoon in Grimsby turned into a right tizzy as a blaze at a local substation plunged thousands into unexpected darkness. The Friargate substation became the day’s centre of attention as fire crews scrambled to the scene shortly before 2 pm, greeted by a smoky transformer. As if on cue, the Freshney, Park, West Marsh and Yarborough wards of Grimsby were thrust into a sudden blackout. Residents were notified via a text from Northern Powergrid that the lads were on it, aiming to restore power by 3.30 pm. Freshney Place wasn’t spared either, with shops and businesses forced to shut their doors and even the traffic lights at Frederick Ward Way taking an impromptu break. While some residents reported a flicker of hope as power returned around 3.20 pm, Northern Powergrid predicts a full recovery by 5 pm. A spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue confirmed their swift response, with two fire engines from Peaks Lane fire station attending the scene and Northern Grid addressing the issue safely.
