Councils in both North and North East Lincolnshire are pleading with their local communities to resist from painting the St George flag on mini roundabouts. This plea is an outcome of a recent trend that has seen numerous individuals colouring roundabouts with England’s emblematic red cross. Council heads such as Rob Waltham from North Lincolnshire Council are stressing the critical need for road safety and how inappropriate it is to modify road markings. A plan to erase any unauthorised or potentially dangerous displays that may disrupt drivers has been proposed by The North East Lincolnshire Council. It is instead suggested that local people express their pride in their heritage by hoisting the flags of Lincolnshire and the Isle of Axholme. Matt Brown, an ex-member of Cleethorpes council, underlined the significance of exercising freedom of speech responsibly.
