Marianne Overton, a woman who has been a driving force in Lincolnshire politics for over three decades, is setting her sights on the county’s top job, running for the first Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire. Overton, an independent candidate, believes in the power of community and the pivotal role it plays in bringing about change. The former teacher is not new to inciting action, having spearheaded the construction of a much-needed bypass in Leadenham back in 1995.
An expert in the workings of local government, Overton doesn’t have the financial backing of a major political party but does have something arguably more valuable: an intimate knowledge of Lincolnshire’s power structures and key players from her twenty-plus years serving on the County Council.
Despite others viewing the role of Mayor as a one-person solution to all of Lincolnshire’s issues, Overton sees herself as part of a team. She understands the mechanics of making things happen and has a knack for rallying people to a cause. She believes the role of the Mayor is one of unification – bringing various organisations together to focus on what truly matters.
Deeply rooted in Lincolnshire, Overton is committed to representing the area and connecting with its various bodies. Her vision for the county is one with a robust safety net where council services can keep up with the growing needs of its residents.
As the leader of the Opposition on North Kesteven District Council, Overton also leads the Independent group on the Local Government Association. She is a firm believer in the rise of independent politicians, claiming that they recently outnumbered Tories in Lincolnshire.
Overton is particularly passionate about the issue of solar farms encroaching on Lincolnshire’s farmland. She argues that it is folly to tie up the region’s fertile land in long-term, costly contracts and is determined to fight this cause.
The race for Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire will take place on May 1, with Overton being one of five confirmed candidates.
