With mere moments to spare before the deadline, a new contender has leapt into the Lincolnshire mayoral race. Sally Horscroft, representing the Green Party, has thrown her hat in the ring for next month’s election. Horscroft managed to scrape together the hefty £5,000 deposit required to stand as a candidate thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign launched just a fortnight ago. If she garners more than 5% of the vote, the deposit will be refunded. ‘We’ve officially entered the race. The fundraising campaign was a roaring success and we’ve handed in our deposit. Now, it’s all systems go for the campaign,’ a jubilant Horscroft told the Local Democracy Reporting Service. She seeks to make strides beyond the achievements of fellow Green Party member, Frank Adlington-Stringer, who surprised everyone by finishing third with 11% in last year’s East Midlands mayoral race. Horscroft, who has previously stood twice for the Lincoln MP post, finishing fourth both times, intends to promote Lincolnshire’s stunning natural beauty and advocate for social justice, equality, and fairness. The soon-to-be-elected mayor will be granted new powers for Lincolnshire from Westminster, along with an annual budget of a staggering £24m. Other declared candidates include Andrea Jenkyns (Reform UK), Marianne Overton (Independent), Jason Stockwood (Labour) and Rob Waltham (Conservative). The Liberal Democrats have hinted at joining the race, but have yet to announce a candidate. The definitive list of candidates will be confirmed later this week.
