Northern Lincolnshire Set for a Deluge of Cash to Bolster Flood Defences

Residents and businesses of northern Lincolnshire can breathe a sigh of relief as millions of pounds are earmarked to be poured into bolstering flood defences. This investment is part of a national strategy to safeguard against the devastating impact of flooding, with over 1,000 schemes across our green and pleasant land set to benefit. Over the next two years, a whopping £2.65 billion will be utilised for the construction and maintenance of these vital flood schemes. This year alone, a cool £430 million is allocated for the construction of these schemes, while an additional £220 million is set aside to repair existing defences. That’s not all, folks – extra funding is also in the pipeline for the upkeep of flood assets, such as pumps, and for initiatives to keep the public informed about flood risks. Floods Minister Emma Hardy took a decisive stance, noting that the government’s role is to protect its citizens and admitted to inheriting flood defences in their worst condition on record. She affirmed the government’s commitment to a ‘Plan for Change’, promising a decade of national renewal and economic growth, including a record £2.65 billion investment in flood defences. On the frontline of flood defence, Caroline Douglass, Executive Director for Flood and Coastal Risk Management for the Environment Agency, emphasised that protecting communities from the harsh impact of flooding was a top priority. She pointed out the increasing importance of this work in an era of climate change and extreme weather. Now, the spotlight turns to local councils and Regional Flood and Coastal Committees, tasked with the duty of delivering these schemes on time to protect as many properties as possible.
