Future of RAF Scampton Sparks Urgent Talks with Government

Local government authorities are pushing for immediate discussions with the UK government over the future of the former RAF Scampton site in Lincolnshire. A call for clarity was made by the leaders of three councils and the Mayor of Lincolnshire in a letter to Alex Norris, Minister for Border Security and Asylum. This follows the Home Office’s evaluation to use military sites instead of hotels for asylum lodging. While the Conservative government had once considered this option, it was later dismissed by the Labour party.

Councillor Jackie Brockway of West Lindsey District Council stressed the importance of making decisions that benefit local communities. Responding to these concerns, the government affirmed that safety remains their top priority.

Leaders advocating for immediate discussions about the site’s future include Brockway, Mayor of Lincolnshire Dame Andrea Jenkyns, County Council Leader Sean Matthews, and Lincoln Council Leader Naomi Tweddle. RAF Scampton, renowned for being the base of the 617 Squadron, famous for the WWII Dambusters raid and the Red Arrows, is seen by Brockway as an inappropriate choice for asylum accommodation, especially considering the £300m regeneration plan earmarked for the area.

Councillor Brockway believes ‘Scampton, a nationally significant asset, is capable of playing a critical role in the UK’s defence and security sector. Regrettably, regional individuals and partners are stuck in uncertainty with no clear vision of the future. It’s time to initiate the site’s liquidation and explore its potential rather than retreading previously unsuccessful proposals.’

The Home Office has noted that alternative sites with less community impact are being considered, such as disused accommodations and former military sites. The safety of residents will be central in this process, with stringent inspections being carried out. They have said more information will be released when available.
