Title: Legal Proceedings Underway: Cleethorpes Resident Faces Charges After Alleged Child Abuse
Seventy-nine-year-old Melvin Denton, a resident of Windsor Road in Cleethorpes, is currently under scrutiny following allegations that he exploited a young girl’s trust, with incidents dating back more than two decades ago. Denton strenuously denied four counts of child indecency and seven counts of indecent assault brought against him. The accusations pertain to an alleged series of sexual offences towards a girl under the age of 14, supposedly spanning from 1997 to 2000.
Following the court proceedings, a jury at the Grimsby Crown Court found Denton guilty on four counts of gross indecency and five counts of indecent assault. As a result, Denton has received a ten-year sentence.
Detective Constable Megan Sherwin, the officer handling the case from Humberside Police’s Protecting Vulnerable Persons Unit, offered praise for the resilience and patience exhibited by the alleged victim throughout the investigative process. Sherwin hopes that the recent legal developments provide some closure to the victim’s family and demonstrated the seriousness with which such criminal allegations are dealt with by the force.
Sherwin used this opportunity to encourage victims of sexual crimes to come forward, emphasising it is never the fault of the victim. Also, she advises anyone who is a victim or knows a victim to report via non-emergency number 101 or dial 999 in case of an emergency.
