A steel firm in Scunthorpe was ordered to pay £266,000 after an employee was seriously injured in a workplace accident, resulting in lifelong physical damage. The incident, which occurred at Kass Steel Stockholders on Glebe Road, took place in February 2022. The employee, involved in running checks on her lorry, was crushed between two vehicles leading to multiple fractures that prevented her from resuming work.
The Bradford-based company, Barrett Steel Limited, pleaded guilty to breaching the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act at Hull Crown Court. A probe carried out by North Lincolnshire Council revealed that the firm had failed to put in place a safe system for pedestrian movement within its premises.
Councillor Carl Sherwood, a council member, underscored the critical role of employers in precluding such accidents. In the aftermath of the court proceeding, the outfit’s Chief Executive, Andy Warcup, expressed remorse and assured that new safety measures had been effected. Alongside the fine, Barrett Steel was instructed to bear the legal charges and a victim surcharge.
