A historic RAF station in Lincolnshire is to be tossed onto the open market, the Home Office has revealed. The RAF Scampton site, a stone’s throw from Lincoln, had initially been eyed by the former Tory government as a refuge for migrants. However, these plans were hastily discarded by the Labour government this past September. West Lindsey District Council had earlier expressed ambitions of acquiring the site, in a move that could have injected a whopping £300m into the local economy. A government spokesperson, however, stated that the sale had to be in line with market regulations for public land, thus dashing Council’s hopes of a direct handover. The Home Office has been grappling with the site’s escalating expenses, exceeding £60m between March 2023 and September 2024. The Ministry swiftly decided to cease using RAF Scampton as an asylum to save taxpayer millions in projected site costs. The council had unveiled an ambitious development blueprint for the site in March 2023, envisioning a state-of-the-art business, aerospace and heritage centre. Despite the sale, the council and its preferred development partner, Scampton Holdings Ltd, remain steadfast in their commitment to the project. Sir Edward Leigh, the Conservative MP for Gainsborough, who had previously rallied behind local residents in opposing the asylum plans, slammed the decision as a ‘madness,’ accusing the government of trying to cover up a £64 million waste in a misguided attempt to house migrants.
