A festival celebrating the centenary of the birth of former Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is set to take place in her birthplace, Grantham in Lincolnshire. Coined as ‘Thatcher Fest’, the event, which begins on 13 October, will include a variety of activities. Highlights of the festival include a drag performance by Matt Tedford portraying ‘The Iron Lady’, as well as speeches by ex-minister Edwina Currie and TV figure Gyles Brandreth.
Thatcher Fest aims not only to stimulate political conversation but also to attract visitors to Grantham, as highlighted by Ashley Baxter, the leader of South Kesteven District Council. The festival’s events will be held at several locations across the town, including the Guildhall Arts Centre and Grantham Museum.
Main attractions include guided tours providing insights into Grantham’s Thatcher-related history, an evening of punk poetry, and a discussion centred around the controversial bronze statue of Thatcher unveiled in the town. Attendees can expect an assorted range of entertainment, from comedic acts and musical performances to historical discussions and exhibitions, to commemorate the life and contributions of the UK’s first female Prime Minister.
