A touching letter written by Philip Larkin, the respected poet and librarian, addressed to his colleague Marie Cooper is ready to be auctioned at Potters Auction Saleroom in Messingham, North Lincolnshire. Dated July 1985, the letter was written shortly after Larkin had surgery for oesophageal cancer, but it bears no reference to his terminal condition. With Larkin’s signature stoicism and humour intact, he thanks Cooper for her unwavering support and he acknowledges his Companion of Honour award. The letter, despite Larkin’s private challenges, maintains a buoyant and grateful tone. Auctioneer Paul Potter has regarded the letter as ‘extraordinary’, praising its clean handwriting. There is no suggestion of Larkin’s declining health. The letter, sitting in a desk drawer for nearly 40 years, is likely to be sold between £300 and £500 when it goes to auction on Thursday.
