A treasured tradition hailing from North Lincolnshire is preparing to thrill a global audience via a fresh TV documentary. The Haxey Hood, a historical game contested between the hamlets of Haxey and Westwoodside dating back to the 14th century, is to be featured in a six-episode series aired on Amazon and Apple TV. The series, titled ‘Gatherings’, casts a spotlight on distinctive British customs.
Haxey locals were given a special preview at the Duke William pub ahead of the television broadcast. The programme’s producer and director, Dave Brewis, put an emphasis on the documentary’s commitment to community spirit, announcing that it celebrates “those unique occurrences which bring communities together in remarkable ways.”
The origins of the Haxey Hood can be traced back to a story involving Lady de Mowbray. It’s said that after she lost her riding hood to the wind, prompting a chase by local agricultural workers, she was so delighted with their vigour that she granted them land. The catch was that the chase had to be recreated each year. This lively event, centering around characters named The Lord, Chief Boggin, and a fool, is celebrated annually on the 6th of January.
Pictures from previous events add substance to the documentary, with local participant Ilene Pearson, 93, casting the film as “absolutely splendid.” Pearson, the daughter of a former ‘Lord’, articulated her lifelong bond with the tradition, stating, “I attend every year without exception because my father was involved when I was young; it’s part of who I am.”
