Title: North Lincolnshire Boy’s Para-Sledge Replaced Following Theft
Body:
Following the theft of his para-sledge, a young North Lincolnshire athlete who is a member of the Sheffield Steelkings disability team has received an outpouring of support, leading to the replacement of his vital equipment. The 13-year-old boy, known as Matthew, who has cerebral palsy, was deeply affected when his sledge was stolen during a visit to the Sheffield Steelers. Matthew was left unable to train when the family’s car, in which the sledge was kept, was stolen.
His mother, Victoria, initiated a fundraising effort that raised over £1,000. This allowed the replacement of the stolen sledge and contributed additional equipment for the Steelkings team. The sledge, imported from Canada, is of vital importance for Matthew’s involvement in the British Para Ice Hockey Association League, where the Steelkings have been participating since 2014.
Giving thanks to those who made donations, which included fans from the Nottingham Panthers and the Canadian women’s para ice hockey team, Matthew voiced his gratitude, describing how the tragedy became a positive experience through the generosity of others. His mother, employed as a nurse, spoke emotionally about the crucial role the team plays in her son’s physical and emotional wellbeing and voiced gratitude to all those who contributed.
Para-ice hockey plays a large role in Matthew’s life, offering him a respite from his daily challenges and giving him the opportunity to simply enjoy the sport with his friends. Victoria spoke of the overwhelming community support, expressing her heartfelt thanks, “Due to everyone’s support, he’s going to get his dream back.”
