Matt Cross, a local from Bourne, Lincolnshire, has made a remarkable first-time appearance, clinching the World Conker Champion title at the 60th World Conker Championships held in Southwick, Northamptonshire. Facing off against a host of competitors, which included Mags Blake, the women’s champion from Corby, Cross triumphantly secured the esteemed title.
“I find myself at a loss for words,” stated the 37-year-old champion, who initially had no anticipations of progressing beyond the preliminary rounds. Following the previous year’s disputes surrounding allegations of a ‘steel conker’ being used for cheating, this year’s event attracted substantial focus. Rigorous preparations were made for the conkers used in the event, many of which were obtained from the royal estate at Windsor, to ensure impartiality.
