A transformative initiative in North East Lincolnshire, known as the FairPlay Football programme, is set to extend its operations for another three years. This pioneering project leverages the universal appeal of football to engage youths in diverse ways. The scheme is a joint effort between North East Lincolnshire Council, YMCA, and other local organisations. Its primary focus is to afford a safe and nurturing environment to children, ranging from eight to 17 years of age.
The task at hand involves regular training and hosting tournaments at locations such as Clee Fields and Immingham Academy. However, the programme endeavours to tackle more profound issues faced by the young generation. These pressing issues span across sexual health, knife crime, and internet safety considerations.
Conveying her perspective on the initiative, Kate Conway, the CEO of YMCA Humber, underscored that the programme reaches beyond merely football. She accentuated the significance of fostering a spirit of teamwork and promoting personal development. Furthermore, she revealed that the scheme, currently facilitated by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, is set to broaden its horizons. The inclusion of netball aims to enhance the participation of young people in sporting activities.
Likewise, Ann-Marie Matson, the director of children’s services at the council, expressed her support for the programme, applauding the array of opportunities it brings to the table for youngsters. Matson considers the programme to be an instrument to boost well-being and fitness levels amongst children, and its overwhelming acceptance by the community is gratifying to see, according to her.
