In an initiative to boost cyclist safety during the winter’s darker hours, complimentary bicycle lights are being handed out throughout North East Lincolnshire. The scheme, instituted by the North East Lincolnshire Council in association with charity R-evolution, is designed to equip bikes for road use and improve their visibility.
The project is part of the government’s Active Travel Fund and was showcased at a recent event in Grimsby. Here, qualified mechanics offered free safety inspections and minor repairs. Councillor Stewart Swinburn expressed optimism that this initiative could potentially save lives by emphasising the importance of cyclists being clearly visible.
The head mechanic at R-evolution, Oliver Follows, noted a busy day of repairs, with tasks such as brake pad replacements and gear alterations, to confirm bikes are ready for road use. Local inhabitants, including Waltham’s Irene Parker, have aired concerns regarding cyclists riding without lights, highlighting visibility as an urgent concern. R-evolution continues to offer weekly repair and community services across the area.
