Lincolnshire Businesses Battling Rising Shoplifting Incidents

Businesses throughout Lincolnshire are contending with a significant increase in instances of shoplifting, as reported by the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW). The Office for National Statistics has recently revealed that thefts across the county have risen by 12% over the last year. Martin Simmons, an employee at a local supermarket and a member of USDAW, has described experiencing thefts on a daily basis. These thefts range from minor items such as dog treats to complete trolley-loads. Simmons has expressed his concerns in particular for the younger staff, suggesting that the issue is being exacerbated by individuals in need and by those who are reselling stolen items. In an attempt to respond to the situation, Lincolnshire Co-op has invested £200,000 in bodycam technology for its staff across all its locations. This investment has resulted in a 25% decrease in instances of theft and abuse. The company’s security lead, Jock Watt, discussed the persistent problem of organised thefts and restated the need for creating a secure environment for both the staff and customers. Lincolnshire Police have also recognised the continuous efforts that are required to reduce shoplifting, while emphasising the right of retail employees to a safe workplace, clear of the threat of violence or abuse related to theft.
