Spalding War Memorial Restored Ahead of Remembrance Day

A beloved landmark nestled within Ascoughfee Hall Gardens in Spalding, Lincolnshire, the 1922 war memorial has been painstakingly renovated in readiness for this year’s Remembrance Sunday. The Grade I listed structure had suffered from damp and time’s wear and tear, but has been revitalised thanks to careful works. Spearheaded by Councillor Elizabeth Sneath on behalf of South Holland District Council, the £205,000 cost of the project was declared “worth every penny” given its importance to regional heritage.

The renovation was undertaken by Skillington Workshop, Grantham-based specialists led by Dr David Carrington. The extensive five-month project included intricate tasks such as re-engraving the inscriptions on the memorial and gilding anew the crowns on its carved flags. Dr Carrington stated it was “a tremendous privilege” to contribute to the rejuvenation of such a considerable historical artefact, despite the challenges posed by matching historical materials.

Now, the community of Spalding can pay respects to their ancestors at a fully refurbished memorial, a tribute to those who gave their lives in service of the nation.
