Residents Demand Action as River Witham Suffers from Pollution and Wildlife Harm

Residents in Lincoln are voicing their concerns about the deteriorating condition of a stretch of the River Witham at Stamp End. The 100-yard area is marred with rubbish, goose carcasses, and a profusion of thick weed. According to residents like Jan Howell, what was previously a picturesque location has deteriorated into a public health concern resembling an open sewer.

Fears for the local wildlife, particularly swans and ducks, are escalating due to the sight of deceased birds among the floating debris in the river. The Environment Agency recognises that the flow of the river is slow, which encourages weed growth. Although local community members have made efforts to clean the area, the problems continue to be persistent. Discarded alcohol bottles are often discovered in the water.

While the Environment Agency forecasts environmental improvements with the onset of rainier weather, local residents such as Ms Howell are calling for changes in habits to address the consistent littering and illegal waste disposal.
