A husband and wife from Crowland, Lincolnshire, have been sentenced to imprisonment for extorting money from individuals seeking adult services online. Leanne Potter-Williamson, 39 and Daniel Williamson, 40, pleaded guilty to multiple instances of blackmail at the Cambridge Crown Court. The court sentenced Potter-Williamson to three years and one month, whilst her husband received a lengthier sentence of seven years and four months.
The court proceedings revealed that Potter-Williamson would establish contact with men through online adult services. Following this, the couple would threaten to disclose their interactions unless they were paid. Most of these threats originated from Williamson, although his wife was also implicated. They manipulated one victim into paying £130 to maintain the confidentiality of his interactions, demonstrating their modus operandi.
During the legal proceedings, it was discovered that the duo’s criminal activities stemmed from severe financial problems. Reports suggest that Williamson was heavily involved in gambling, leading to substantial debts, and there were also indications of substance usage by Potter-Williamson. In spite of their personal difficulties, Judge Philip Grey censured their actions, stating their intent was to ‘terrify or horrify’ those they victimised.
This case underscores the inherent risks associated with online adult services and emphasises the need for cautious behaviour while using the internet.
