Long Sutton, Lincolnshire-based Platinum Group Metals Recycling Ltd has been imposed a substantial fine of £1m for running an unlawful waste site. The company was prosecuted for trading catalytic converters without procuring the mandatory environmental permits. The sole director of the company, Edvars Stancik, who is thought to currently be in Lithuania, has an arrest warrant in his name.
The prosecution at Lincoln Crown Court revealed that neither Stancik nor the company obtained the necessary permits prior to dealing with thousands of catalytic converters. Recorder John Hardy KC, during sentencing, underscored the seriousness of the offence, thereby justifying the need for such a hefty fine. A confiscation order against the company had already been passed by a court ruling back in May.
The Environment Agency, in collaboration with Lincolnshire Police, is persistently striving to combat waste crime in the area.
