Sun-Powered Future: New Solar Farm Set To Brighten Lincolnshire’s Energy Prospects

A new era of renewable energy could be on the horizon for Sleaford, as plans for a fresh solar farm near the town are unveiled. The proposed installation, nestled on White Cross Lane by Burton Pedwardine, will sit adjacent to two existing solar farms.

The project, spearheaded by Starlight Energy, is expected to generate a substantial 42MW of renewable energy, enough to power an impressive 23,000 homes. This sizeable contribution to the local grid means the decision rests with North Kesteven District Council, rather than government officials.

The solar farm, earmarked for 76 hectares of land near the Burton Gorse plantation, will neighbour two other operational solar ventures. The proposal includes the installation of three-metre-tall panels which will stay in place for 40 years before removal.

Starlight Energy has demonstrated a commitment to community consultation, having scaled back the project following discussions with Burton Pedwardine Parish Council. They’ve also confirmed the removal of panels near residential areas.

Aside from contributing to cleaner energy, the project is set to bring a significant financial boon to the area. The council could benefit from an extra £50,000 per annum in business rates, totalling a hefty £2m over the project’s lifespan.

Approval of the project will also see the establishment of a community fund for the local area, a move welcomed by residents regardless of their stance on the solar farm.

Whilst the proposal brings many positives, it’s not without its critics. Some locals express concern over the growing number of significant solar projects in North Kesteven, including the 524-hectare Heckington Fen development.

For those wishing to weigh in on the White Cross Lane plans, North Kesteven District Council’s website is now open for public comments.
