Grimsby Central Library Closure Extended Due to Unexpected Asbestos Concerns

Grimsby Central Library, a core part of our community, is facing an extended closure period following a water leak and the consequential discovery of asbestos. In an announcement from the North East Lincolnshire Council, it’s confirmed that the 58-year-old building in Town Hall Square will be out of action for a substantial period. The council extends its apologies to library users for the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen circumstance.

A search is currently underway to identify a suitable temporary location for the library services within the town centre. Key considerations in this quest include available space, location convenience, and necessary IT infrastructure. The Council has assured the public that further details will be released promptly.

The presence of asbestos, which was common in buildings from the library’s era, has necessitated the closure following the water leak. The safety of the local history archives and books is paramount, and their cautious removal will be conducted during the remedial work.

Cllr Hayden Dawkins, who holds the portfolio for culture, heritage and the visitor economy, expressed that dealing with the asbestos issue is an essential step before any further plans for the building can be considered. He reiterated the council’s commitment to swift action and once again apologised for the inconvenience to library users.

In the interim, library users are encouraged to return books to the libraries in Cleethorpes, Waltham, or Immingham, or to the reception at the Municipal offices. Other services, like the Credit Union and one-to-one appointments, are being redirected, with contact details provided for bookings.

Alternative library services remain available online, and consultations are ongoing regarding the future of the borough’s libraries and archive services. Despite the current challenges, the council remains committed to ensuring the seamless provision of library services to the community.
