A Lincoln-based food delivery driver has been handed a four-year incarceration following a fatal collision on Carholme Road that resulted in the death of a woman. Tarequl Islam, 32, of Lindum Avenue, admitted to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving at Lincoln Crown Court. The case details an event in May where Islam’s car hit Maria Cristina Cherino Munoz, aged 55, on a pedestrian crossing as he did not observe a red light. 17 days after the incident, Munoz died in hospital due to her injuries.
The inquiry by Lincolnshire Police disclosed that at the time of the collision, Islam was neither speeding nor was he distracted by a mobile phone. However, Islam argued that he could not observe the red light or the pedestrian crossing due to sun glare. Despite this visibility issue, he did not decrease his speed or halt his vehicle, in fear of a potential backlash from following traffic.
Detective Sergeant James Perring, from the investigative team, emphasised on the instrumental role of following road safety norms. He was quoted saying, “This accident is a result of Islam’s non-compliance with the fundamental road norms. By disregarding the Highway Code’s advice on how to react when dazzled by sunlight, he overlooked the red light, leading to heartbreaking consequences for Cristina.”
Maria Cristina Cherino Munoz’s demise has caused deep pain for her family, who now have to endure life without her. This incident is a harsh reminder of the fatalities negligent driving can potentially cause.
