John King, a 79-year-old resident of Scunthorpe, is marvelling at the durability of his family’s vintage Christmas lights. These were purchased way back in 1956, a fact that stands as a testament to their quality and endurance. Mr King fondly remembers the joy of his mother bringing home these lights from Halfords on Scunthorpe’s High Street, costing just 18 shillings.
Miraculously, even after nearly seven decades, these Philips-made lights still operate flawlessly, without any need for replacement bulbs. Over the years, Mr King has taken great care of them and cultivated a deep attachment for this symbol of festive delight. Today, having already retired, he has also decided to retire these lights, preserving them as a cherished memory of Christmases gone by. He remains hopeful that they will continue to retain their luminance for several more decades to come.
