Urgent £13.5m Repairs Needed for Lincoln Castle, Warns Councillor

Lincoln Castle, a cornerstone of the city’s history for almost a millennium, is in need of vital maintenance work. Natalie Oliver, who is responsible for children’s services and culture at Lincolnshire County Council and associated with the Reform UK party, has raised alarms about the deteriorating state of the castle’s walls. Oliver warns that unless an urgent injection of £13.5 million is made available, there could be a risk of closing the castle to the public because of the potential safety hazards. The previous council led by the Conservative party was criticised by Oliver for not implementing a reliable investment plan, accusing them of depending on ’emergency investments’, instead of regular maintenance work. However, Richard Davies, the opposition leader from the Conservative party, defended the previous administration, drawing attention to considerable funding for the castle over the previous two decades. The recently appointed council, now under the control of the Reform party, is currently putting together a restoration plan to save what Oliver calls the ‘jewel in the crown’ of Lincoln’s age-old scenery.
