Stacey Southwell, founder of the North Hykeham-based charity Sophie’s Journey, has urged local shoplifters to seek help instead of resorting to theft. Southwell has shared her concerns over the growing number of thefts at the charity’s shop, with stolen donated goods amounting to hundreds of pounds recently. Despite the thefts, Southwell’s primary concern seems centred on the welfare of those committing the crimes, encouraging them to seek aid rather than risk legal problems.
Sophie’s Journey, started in memory of Southwell’s 12-year-old daughter Sophie Robinson who tragically died from a brain tumour, serves to provide holidays for child cancer patients and their families. Since its commencement earlier this year, the charity shop has managed to muster substantial funds. However, a surge in thefts in the past two months has presented a significant obstacle. Stolen items include clothing, toys, ornaments, and jewellery, undermining the charity’s mission.
In order to discourage further thefts, more CCTV cameras have been put in place. Nonetheless, Southwell emphasises that those facing hardship should opt to engage with the charity for help instead. “Don’t risk trouble if you’re struggling. Simply reach out to us and we’ll offer assistance,” she maintains.
