What an enlightening week it has been for us here in Lincoln! We’ve journeyed into the past, uncovering fascinating narratives from our significant history and finding that the essence of Lincolnshire is deeply ingrained within our past. This week, we explored a podcast that has been diligently excavating Lincolnshire’s history, casting light on our frequently undervalued gems. Whether it’s the lesser-recognised rock heritage of Spalding or JFK’s clandestine visit, the voyage into our county’s history has indeed been illuminating. It serves as a nudge to the fact that we’ve always been part of a greater web of stories and that our past is as vibrant and diverse as we are.

The gripping yarn of Spider T, our own heroic wartime vessel, is hard to ignore. Playing a pivotal role during World War II, this historical boat was instrumental in evacuating women and children from Hull amidst the deadly Luftwaffe bombing raids. The Spider T stands for more than just a seafaring craft — it exemplifies our resilience and determination to guard and conserve. The story of Spider T is a gentle reminder of the courage and grit of those who laid everything on the line during those dark eras. It forms part of our common memory, a sliver of Lincolnshire’s core character.

These narratives, whether focusing on the rush of rock-n-roll or the heroism of wartime, reflect on our identity as a community. They reiterate that Lincolnshire has always been a stronghold of resilience, strength, and imagination. So here’s raising a glass to Lincolnshire and the chronicles that amplify our self-perception. We’re not just a county; we are a community bonded by a shared past that continually spurs and unites us. Let’s go on acknowledging and celebrating our history, whilst setting our gaze onto what future holds for us.
