MPs Summoned for Emergency Debate to Salvage British Steel

An emergency session of Parliament has been scheduled for this Saturday to discuss the future of British Steel’s Scunthorpe plant. The government is considering ‘taking control’ of the embattled company, according to insider sources. This follows the statement from the plant’s Chinese owners that its blast furnaces are no longer economically viable. Negotiations have been ongoing this week to ensure the company, which provides employment for 2,700 individuals, continues its operations. MPs, who were on their Easter recess and scheduled to return on the 22nd of April, have been recalled for this urgent matter. While Ministers have indicated a preference for a commercial solution to save the plant, nationalising the firm has not been ruled out, leaving all options open for discussion.
