A determined 12-year-old girl from Grimsby, named Aniyah, has made a commendable decision to carry out a considerable 122-mile walking stride to generate funds for the Guide Dogs charity. This organisation has provided her unparalleled support since she began experiencing sight loss. Aniyah’s trip will span from her home all the way to the Guide Dogs centre situated in Atherton, Greater Manchester. This centre holds a special place in her heart, for it’s where she met her companion dog, Spirit. Spirit has significantly contributed to Aniyah’s journey of reclaiming her self-confidence after being diagnosed with macular dysfunction, a condition that impairs central vision. According to her mother, Lea, Aniyah’s aim for this walk is not only to raise funds but also to raise awareness about her condition, and above all, display the self-confidence she has regained, with Spirit loyally accompanying her.
The onset of Aniyah’s vision problems was first noticeable towards the concluding months of 2023. At first, Aniyah was reticent about leaving the house, with school attendances being the only exception, which were also laden with hurdles. Nonetheless, with the support extended by the Guide Dogs charity and the unconditional companionship of Spirit from September onwards, Aniyah’s perspective towards life has taken a positive turn. Spirit, although not officially a guide dog, serves as a buddy dog, a role that has been instrumental in helping children suffering from sight loss enhance their self-confidence and independence.
In spite of the continual discomfort in her eyes, Aniyah unyieldingly continues to attend school, even if it’s for a couple of hours daily, reflecting her resolve to keep progressing. Lea, her mother, is overwhelmingly proud of Aniyah’s resilience and bravery. Aniyah has already opened up about her experiences with sight loss to her classmates at primary school, and plans to follow suit at her current secondary school. Kick-starting her challenge on New Year’s Day with a seven-mile walk along Cleethorpes seafront, she sets an empowering example for her community.
