In Skegness, controversy has ignited over the introduction of new street lighting fixtures, reminiscent of ‘flying saucers’, prompting a cessation in their installation due to significant local dissent. Lincolnshire County Council had originally commenced the process of replacing the elderly, dilapidated lamps lining Lumley Road.
Notwithstanding, locals took issue with the innovative design, citing it as unsightly and discordant with the established aesthetics of the neighbourhood. A peaceful demonstration spearheaded by local inhabitant Michael Moody resulted in an agreement from local councillors to include the community in the decision-making process for an alternative design.
Councillor Jimmy Brookes ascertained that residents will have the opportunity to contribute to discussions around a variety of alternative options, hopefully, aligning closer with the original aesthetics of the street lighting in the area.
