Bishop Grosseteste University’s campus was abruptly closed as an unsanctioned travellers’ camp sprang up on its sports fields. Lincolnshire Police confirmed they were alerted on Thursday when a flurry of caravans and cars invaded the playing fields of the university situated off Longsdale Road in Lincoln. Despite the sudden influx, no reports of disorder have been noted, and police are keeping a vigilant watch over the situation. The university announced that a significant crowd of people and vehicles had swarmed the campus, urging staff, students, and visitors to keep clear. Deputy Vice Chancellor Tom Dannatt expressed: ‘This morning, we woke up to an alarming situation where numerous people and their vehicles had taken over our sports fields. We are liaising with the police to rectify the situation as swiftly and safely as feasible. Our estate and security teams are providing necessary support on campus. The primary concern remains the safety of our staff, students, planned guests, and local community. Hence, we urge all staff, students, and visitors to refrain from visiting the campus.’ Ben Jackson, the manager of public protection and antisocial behaviour at the City of Lincoln Council, noted: ‘We are cognizant of the unsanctioned traveller encampment that has been established on the grounds in the Longdales Road area of Lincoln. In response, we have initiated our protocol for such incidences and are collaborating with our partners and the landowner to comprehend better how the situation will be handled.’
