Unveiling fresh data, it’s been shown that Lincolnshire, specifically the Boston and Skegness locality, is home to the highest number of off-grid properties within the East Midlands region. An astonishing 19,000 residences, not connected to the national gas grid, are found in this area, a greater count than any other regional counterpart. So why do folks opt to live off-grid? Reasons are diverse, spanning the desire for self-sustainability, a closer connection to nature, and eco-conscious motivations. This revelation comes courtesy of Jefferson Gas, who compared government statistics on domestic properties versus domestic gas meters registered. Further analysis by region and constituency was performed to identify the distribution of off-grid homes. Trailing Boston and Skegness’s impressive 19,000, neighbouring Nottingham East houses an estimated 18,000 off-grid properties. Lincolnshire’s Louth and Horncastle area, along with South Holland and The Deepings, collectively have an estimated 28,000 more. Of the 257,000 East Midlands properties living off the grid, a staggering 84,000 are nestled within Lincolnshire, including thousands in Grantham, Bourne, Gainsborough, Sleaford, North Hykeham and Lincoln. Stuart Ferguson from Jefferson Gas shed light on the alternatives to gas grid connection, including bottled gas, Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), oil boilers, biofuels, and full electric systems. Although some may opt for these due to environmental considerations or personal preferences, the reality is that connecting non-previously connected properties to the mains gas can be a costly affair, running into thousands of pounds.
