PM Takes Action to Safeguard British Steel’s Future in Scunthorpe

Our nation’s steel industry, a beacon of national pride and heritage, is a cornerstone of livelihood for countless individuals and is crucial to our blueprint for change – the rebuilding of Britain. Today, I am stepping forward to shield British employment and the workers who make it possible. Scunthorpe’s lifeblood is steel. It has moulded the community for generations, with families earning their living from the steelworks. This proud tradition of manufacturing, a trait I learnt from my father who was a factory worker, is an integral part of our national identity. It’s our past, and I am determined to make it our future. Having visited Scunthorpe and met its steelworkers, I understand the significance of these jobs and the steel they produce, not just for this region, but for the whole country. Quality jobs in British industries are central to our national renewal plan. Hence, we are taking swift action in the best interest of Scunthorpe and the nation, striving to deliver security and regeneration for the working class. In order to save British Steel, we are recalling Parliament and my government will promptly pass emergency legislation, empowering the Business Secretary to take all necessary steps to prevent the closure of blast furnaces. These are uncertain times, but rest assured, this government stands by you. I am confident in a bright future for the steel industry in this country, and we will explore all possibilities to attain the best outcome. Today, we act to safeguard your future, the future of British Steel in Scunthorpe, and the future of Britain. This will forever be our commitment.
