Humber Health Authorities Appeal for Spring Covid-19 Booster Uptake

Health authorities in the Humber region are imploring individuals, who qualify, to ensure they receive their Covid-19 booster jab this coming spring. The booster vaccine plays a crucial role in shielding against various Covid strains, reducing the risk of contagion, transmission, severe illness and hospitalisation. The NHS has already dispatched millions of reminders through text messages, emails, NHS App notifications and letters, urging eligible individuals to step forward. Approximately 7.5 million people across the UK, who are at a higher risk of Covid-19 complications, can secure appointments via the NHS national booking system, NHS App, or by dialling 119. Those eligible for the spring booster comprise adults aged 75 and above, older adult care home residents, and individuals aged over six months with a compromised immune system. Covid-19 continues to pose a significant threat, particularly for these groups. During the winter, hospitals recorded an average daily occupancy of over 1,000 beds by Covid patients. Data from last year’s spring Covid-19 vaccination campaign from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) revealed that those vaccinated were over 40% less likely to require hospital admission due to Covid-19 for a period of up to two months post-vaccination. Dr Nigel Wells, Executive Director of Clinical and Professional at NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB), emphasised that immunity could diminish over time and that high-risk individuals should refresh their protection. With thousands of appointments available daily nationwide, predominantly at pharmacies, the vaccination programme will run until Tuesday 17 June. Walk-in appointments may also be offered. The NHS walk-in finder provides a comprehensive list of locations. The availability of appointments at pharmacies varies due to bookings and vaccine supply. Local NHS teams are striving to make the vaccination process as convenient as possible, arranging home visits for eligible housebound patients and conducting visits to older adult care homes.
