Anglian Water’s New Flood Defence: A Hidden Hero in Horncastle

Title: Anglian Water’s New Flood Defence: A Hidden Champion in Horncastle

In an endeavour to protect Horncastle from future flooding, Anglian Water has put in place an impressive underground storage tank, with the capacity to hold 108,000 litres of water. The primary goal of this new infrastructure is to enhance the town’s resilience to extreme weather occurrences, which are on the rise due to climate change. Strategically located off the Wong, the tank is designed to temporarily store rainwater during heavy rainfall, thereby giving the sewerage system enough time to deal with the surplus before it is treated at the Horncastle Water Recycling Centre.

This strategic move is a response to last winter’s severe rainfall that overwhelmed the local sewer systems. The tank will slow the discharge of wastewater, hence protecting the Old River Bain including its surrounding wildlife. Chloe Bailey, Anglian Water’s customer experience specialist, emphasised the urgency of such solutions. She stressed on the importance of readiness for potential torrential rain and rising sea levels.

This £1.5 million project is a part of Anglian Water’s ambitious plan to invest £100 million over the ensuing three years. This includes the most sizable storm water storage expansion in the company’s history. The initiative highlights their pledge to protect communities and the environment against the escalating threat of floods.
