Unveiling History: The Cathedral’s Hidden Treasures Resurface

Title: Unveiling History: Hidden Treasures of the Cathedral Brought to Light

An engaging new exhibition at Lincoln Cathedral seeks to tell the tale of its previously lost treasures, initially confiscated during the turbulent English Reformation period. Named ‘A Right Royal Heist’, the exhibition is scheduled to open on the 3rd of May, timed to complement Lincoln’s Festival of History. During the Dissolution of the Monasteries under the reign of Henry VIII in 1536, a valuable assortment of jewels and vestments was taken from the cathedral. Today, local artists bring these historical items back to life through a variety of methods, such as digital illustration, ceramics, painting, and textiles.

The exhibition’s content is drawn from a comprehensive inventory compiled by the cathedral’s treasurer, Henry Lytherland, which has amazingly endured over four centuries. The work of selected artists, which includes Mel Langton, Fiona Hodges, Lisa Tank, and Hannah Cawthorne from the Indigo Crow Gallery, will be showcased in the Exhibition Gallery until the conclusion of July. Langton and Hodges derived their inspiration from Henry VIII himself, creating pieces which depict him as a dominant figure overseeing the lost treasures, whilst other artworks concentrate on the cathedral’s vestments and the historical item list.

Promising to be a captivating exploration into a crucial segment of the cathedral’s history, this exhibition combines art and heritage to bring the past to life in a vivid and engaging manner.
