Humberside Police Urge Stalking Victims to Break the Silence

Humberside Police have taken action to address growing concerns over stalking by disclosing that there are currently 49 Stalking Protection Orders active within the Humber region. With the onset of National Stalking Awareness Week from April 21, victims of such ominous offences are being encouraged to step forward.

Chief Inspector Nicola Roworth, who leads Humberside Police’s Safeguarding Governance Unit, emphasised the importance of this week, stating that stalking, especially when linked to domestic abuse, is a crucial matter both regionally and nationally.

Roworth punctuated the increasing severity brought upon violators, indicating the necessity for efficient police intervention. She informed that there are several applications for Stalking Protection Orders in the works, with the eldest order lasting a decade.

Studies suggest that individuals who have previously engaged in stalking or domestic abuse behaviours are significantly more prone to inflicting severe harm on their targets. Roworth acknowledged the difficulties victims encounter while stepping forward but emphasised the importance of reporting such distressing incidents. Victims are encouraged to contact the non-emergency number 101 or to dial 999 if in immediate danger.

Stalking manifests in varying ways, encompassing a broad range of behaviours typically characterised by an obsessive, repeated pattern that induces fear and distress. These behaviours may range from unwarranted contact on social media platforms to physical surveillance.
