After an exceptional 154-year run, G. Hewitt & Son, a treasured jewellers in Grimsby’s Victoria Street, is preparing to close its doors for the last time. The store’s closing marks the end of an illustrious chapter in the town’s history, initiated by Jonathan Hewitt, the great-grandson of the founder George Hewitt. Jonathan began working in the family business at the tender age of 16 and now, following a 50-year career, has elected to retire.
Jonathan reflected on the store’s rich history, stating: “A legacy of 154 years is quite a significant achievement. Not only were we one of the first UK retailers to stock Rolex, with recorded sales as far back as 1919, but by 2011, our store had one of the largest Rolex showcases in the country. It has been an honour to be part of Grimsby’s High Street history, and we are pleased to be closing on such a positive note.”
The shop was established in 1871 by George Hewitt, a farmer and horseman who had a knack for clock repair. Swiftly earning a reputation for outstanding service, it is commonly believed that George had even met Rolex founder, Hans Wilsdorf. Overcoming the ordeals of the war years under the capable leadership of Arthur Hewitt, the business relocated to larger premises on Victoria Street in 1939.
Jonathan spoke highly of his dedicated team, expressing particular admiration for store manager Peter Booker, a gemologist who has dedicated nearly 40 years of his career to the establishment. He said, “Our personnel have been crucial to our success and have truly become like family. We want to extend our sincere gratitude towards them and our faithful clients.”
In honour of the store’s closure, a special sale will be held offering substantial discounts. This includes a 50% price reduction on all jewellery and markdowns on Bremont and Tudor watches, set to begin at 10am on Saturday, 26th of April.
