Grimsby’s much-loved hydrotherapy pool, an essential haven for children and adults with disabilities, is facing potential closure. Located within Humberston Park School, the pool has served as a beacon of hope since it was established in 2007 due to a surge of community fundraising efforts. Regrettably, the pool’s existence is now threatened by a combination of decreasing donations in the wake of Covid and escalating energy costs. The annual energy costs of the pool have skyrocketed from £12,000 to a worrying £30,000, thereby jeopardising its availability to the broader community.
Gemma Rylatt, a trustee and Business Manager of the pool, conveyed the gravity of the situation, stating, ‘It’s heartbreaking. We may be forced to restrict its usage to just students of the school or shut it down completely.’ For families like that of Kelly Porte, the pool is a staple. Her nine-year-old daughter Luna, who has additional needs, finds respite and tranquillity in the confines of the pool. Similarly, Arthur, a young boy who suffers from Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, gains immense therapeutic benefits from the pool which supports his physiotherapy regimen.
The plea is now out for local businesses and individuals to band together again to ensure this invaluable facility remains operational. Gemma Rylatt can be contacted at bmhpss@hpark.org.uk for those willing to pledge their support.
