Fuel Poverty Hits Lincolnshire: Over 15% of Households Struggle to Keep Warm

Spring’s lingering chill sees many Lincolnshire residents huddling under blankets rather than enjoying heating comfort. A recent report, published on 7th October 2024, reveals that a troubling 15.4% of households in Lincolnshire found themselves classified as ‘fuel poor’ in 2022. Over 53,000 homes are thus confronted with the harsh dilemma of choosing between heating and other essential expenditures.

In examining the county’s various districts, East Lindsey appears to bear the brunt, with a concerning 18.1% of its households grappling with fuel poverty. The areas of Boston and Lincoln report similarly disturbing figures, with 15.8% and 17.1% of households, respectively, struggling to maintain heating.

These percentages aren’t merely statistical data; they represent real-life choices for families faced with the dread of deciding between affording their energy bill or purchasing food, particularly as winter approaches. Even in North Kesteven, which reports a comparatively lower figure at 12.8%, the consequences are still deeply felt.

Year-on-year comparison of these figures reveals a troubling trend. Although the data does not document changes from 2021, the overarching regional statistics signal a persistent problem seeing little to no substantial improvement.

In light of soaring energy costs affecting locals, community groups and councils are being urged to provide assistance to those in desperate need. Lincolnshire might be renowned for its inherent beauty and metaphorical warmth, but the grim reality of fuel poverty continues to cast an ominous shadow.

In the face of rising energy costs and falling temperatures, Lincolnshire residents are left contemplating one core question: how do we ensure no individual is left to suffer the cold?

Data is sourced from the Lincolnshire County Council open datasets.
