Scunthorpe resident, John Thorn, is preparing to take part in his inaugural marathon in Manchester today, all in the name of Cancer Research UK. While much national attention is directed towards the London Marathon, the 32-year-old John is readying himself for the UK’s second largest marathon, having already finished a 5K Race for Life and the North Lincolnshire half-marathon as warm-ups.
Motivated by personal tragedy, John’s marathon challenge is a tribute to family and friends who have suffered from cancer. “I’ve seen the devastation this disease can bring, having lost family and friends to it,” he said, reflecting on the personal impact of cancer, including losses from both his wife’s and a friend’s families.
John’s fundraising efforts are gathered under the banner of ‘John Thorn’s Running Challenges’, as he seeks to aid the essential efforts of Cancer Research UK. “One in every two people will be affected by cancer in their lifetime,” he stated. “Every contribution, however small, plays a vital role in pioneering research.”
With the backing of relatives, friends, and workmates from the Two Sisters chicken factory, John is set to confront the difficult task ahead. “The biggest hurdle will be keeping up the pace and motivation throughout the race,” he confided, with the goal of finishing the marathon in less than five hours.
Cancer Research UK have commended endeavours like John’s, pointing out that their work has significantly helped increase cancer survival rates over the past half-century, but stressed the ongoing necessity for support to carry on their research into more than 200 types of cancer.
