RAF Warns Drone Users of Danger to Pilots at Coningsby

RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire has to contend with at least one drone flight a month that has not been authorised, which potentially poses a risk to the Typhoon jets stationed there. Squadron Leader Alex Ritchie, who handles safety at the base, has pointed out that whilst there are individuals who undertake unauthorised drone flights with ill intent, there are many tourists and hobbyists who unknowingly break aviation rules, not realising the danger they represent to military aircraft. In response to this, the RAF has been communicating with local holiday companies to educate travellers about the importance of respecting restricted air zones. Operators of drones need to stick to the rules set out by the Civil Aviation Authority, which stipulate drones must not fly above 400ft and must stay away from no-fly zones. Staff at Tattershall Lakes Country Park, which is located close to the base, have also been informed about drone safety, with spokesperson Ryan Laviolette underlining the importance of respecting and safeguarding their RAF neighbours.
