Algae Alert Issued for Scunthorpe’s Ashby Ville Lake

Individuals visiting Ashby Ville Lake in Scunthorpe have been recommended to tread carefully as there is a potential outbreak of blue-green algae. North Lincolnshire Council alongside the Environment Agency, are keeping a keen eye on the quality of the water. The blue-green algae, otherwise known as cyanobacteria, are microorganisms which proliferate in waters which are both warm and rich in nutrients, often forming conspicuous scums or mats. While it is a fact that not all blooms are toxic, it is impossible to distinguish the toxic blooms merely by visual examination. Any contact with or accidentally consuming these blooms can result in health problems such as nausea, irritation of the skin, and difficulties in respiration. The council has sternly reminded everyone about the dangers of swimming in open water, pointing out hazards like hidden debris and shock due to cold water, which could be potentially dangerous to both humans and pets. Owners of pets are specifically advised to keep their animals far from the water, as they are even more susceptible to the harmful effects of the algae.
