Historic Spalding War Memorial Undergoes Vital Restoration

Restoration work is currently being conducted on the prominent war memorial in Spalding, Lincolnshire. Designed by the esteemed Sir Edwin Lutyens, the World War One memorial was completed in 1922 and serves as a tribute to the local heroes who lost their lives during the wartime. The memorial, situated in Ayscoughfee Gardens, carries inscriptions of the years of both world wars. The South Holland District Council funds the refurbishment, which is expected to be completed by Remembrance Day in November.

The elaborate five-month project includes the fine restoration work on the memorial’s panels, flooring, ceiling, and the roof tiles of this Grade I listed monument. Councillor Henry Bingham, the council’s portfolio holder for assets, commented on the significance of the restoration project, identifying it as a long-overdue enterprise. He stated, ‘It is a meticulous and expert process that even though will take several months to complete, we are certain that it will ensure the preservation and prestige of the monument.’ Elizabeth Sneath, portfolio holder for conservation and heritage, underscored the significance of preserving the monument’s legacy for future generations, asserting, ‘We must do all in our power to safeguard it and the memories of the ones commemorated within it for many more generations to come.’
